Abstract

ENRIQUEZ LICON, Dora Elvia. La iglesia Católica en Baja California: Péndulo entre misión y diócesis. Frontera norte [online]. 2008, vol.20, n.39, pp.7-35. ISSN 2594-0260.

Changes in the organizational structure of Baja California's Catholic Church during the 19th and 20th centuries are analyzed in this article. The aim of the study is to provide the basic elements for identifying the particular regional and historical conditions that promoted the transition of this institution, from mission to diocesan hierarchy. The shift from the former to the latter was far from smooth, as it can be seen from the fact that the formal establishment of the Dioceses of Mexicali and Tijuana were not authorized by Rome until the 1960s.

Keywords : Catholic Church; mission; apostolic vicariate; diocese; religion.
