Abstract

RUIZ MARRUJO, Olivia  and  RED DE LAS CASAS DEL MIGRANTE-SCALABRINI. Los riesgos de cruzar: La migración centroamericana en la frontera México-Guatemala. Frontera norte [online]. 2001, vol.13, n.25, pp.7-41. ISSN 2594-0260.

In recent years, international migration along the Mexican-Guatemalan border has become increasingly dangerous. This article presents preliminary results of a research project which aims to document and analyze the risk-situation along die principal route used by Central American migrants (undocumented in this case) traveling through the Chiapan coast, known as the Soconusco, in Mexico's southern border. The analysis presents results gleaned from registers of institutions dealing with immigrants, in-depth interviews and participant observation. Some of these situations are described, pointing them out in risk maps, in order to make a spatial record of the dangers, thus permitting an exploration of the ways that geographical space reflects the risk situation lived by the immigrants and contributes to this phenomenon.
