Abstract

LOPEZ LEVI, Liliana. Fortificaciones habitacionales en México: De la violencia dominante a la violencia dominadora. Argumentos (Méx.) [online]. 2011, vol.24, n.66, pp.61-81. ISSN 0187-5795.

One of the main problems in Mexico, which has increased considerably during the last years, is public insecurity and violence. The fear that it creates, produces certain imaginaries, which are symbolically reflected in different urban spaces, of which, I emphasize on the case of gated communities, where developers have made a successful use of the situation to sell fortified residence. The analysis of the production of closed living space is based on the theory of urban imaginaries and it is used to point out the way that violence becomes a dominating force that reduces the quality of citizenship of Mexico City's inhabitants.

Keywords : prevailing violence; dominating violence; urban imaginaries; spatial segregation; gated communities.
