Abstract

PAZ GARCIA, Ana Pamela. La universidad latinoamericana como ámbito de aprendizaje de la participación política: el desafío de educar para una ciudadanía más protagonista y una democracia más inclusiva. Argumentos (Méx.) [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.62, pp.107-128. ISSN 0187-5795.

Nowadays it is observed a wide field of discussion about the role of higher education within the processes of political socialization, but the scope shows diffuse contours by considering the variety of approaches that the issue offers. On one hand, a number of contextual changes as a result from historical reconfiguration of transnational capitalism and its social-economic processes on a global scale, are affecting the internal dynamics of universities. In this sense, new challenges are added to the old structural problems common to higher education institutions in Latin America, by questioning the power of their formation to cover an area of civic socialization, wich dangerous and selfishly in recent years has been dominated by massive markets of information and entertainment, characterized by an homogeneous, concentrated and increasingly monopolized global supply. On the other hand and by doing justice to a cross-disciplinary look in wich experts seems to be agree by trying to perform a sufficiently thorough and comprehensive reading, it is observed too a systematic recurrence to culture-politics binomial in the explanation of certain problems at the critical stage of transition that its going trough higher education. There by both, the political socialization required for the practice of an active democratic citizenry and the university as essential institution in the formation of adults, are observed as mutually implicated.

Keywords : higher education; political socialization; democracy.
