Resumen

CROSS, Cecilia  y  FREYTES FREY, Ada Cora. Movimientos piqueteros: tensiones de género en la definición del liderazgo. Argumentos (Méx.) [online]. 2007, vol.20, n.55, pp.77-94. ISSN 0187-5795.

This paper studies women's different forms of involvement in picketing movements' leadership in Argentina. Within these movements, there are two typical profiles of leadership: "neighbourhood referents" -in charge of daily social activities and social policies' administration-and "leaders" -who take strategic political decisions. Most of the latter are women, while most of the leaders are men. The paper discuss how this "division of work" in fact reproduces gender inequities within these movements. To analyse such process of reproduction, it examine movement's organisation practices and gender representations that legitimate this "division of work" in leadership. The discussion is based on empirical data from a comparative case study performed in four picketing organisations. The field work included non structured interviews to leaders and neighbourhood referents (men and women), and observation of daily activities and public demonstrations. The analysis involved comparisons among participants' different perspectives and representations, as well as comparisons among movements.

Palabras llave : social movements; leadership; gender relationships; picketing organisations; women's spaces.
