Temperate forests are distributed on several soil types; however information on the physical, chemical and biological properties of these soils and their influence on the carbon cycle are scarce. The objective of this review was to determine the soil carbon stocks in soils covered by temperate forests. These forests are distributed over 23 types of soil, mainly Leptosols, Regosols, Luvisols, Phaeozems, Cambisols, Umbrisols and Andosols formed from volcanic materials in Central Mexico, sedimentary rocks in the Sierra Madre Oriental and a wide variety of substrates in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Information on the potential for soil carbon sequestration in temperate forests is skewed to the aboveground biomass; and there is less information on soil carbon stocks and little understanding of the stabilization processes. The soil carbon storage varied with soil type, species composition and relief. Andosols, despite their low abundance, are the soils with the greatest capacity to store carbon due to their mineralogical characteristics. Soil organic carbon and carbon flux changes in temperate forests in Mexico are a result of human activities such land use change, forest management, fires, regeneration and replacement of species. The land use change is one of the main factors behind the carbon flux in these ecosystems; however, there is still no clear evidence that it is negative. In this review, existing information was synthesized to propose future research to improve our understanding of the stabilization processes of soil organic carbon of temperate forests.
