Mining activities in the Dominican Republic are associated with heavy metal contamination of surrounding areas, increased soil erosion, loss of ecosystem biodiversity, and negative impacts to soil quality (i.e., biological, chemical and physical properties). The objective of this work was to assess selected soil physical and chemical characteristics of a mined site that was re-planted with Casuarina equisetifolia Forst and Acacia mangium Willd in order to determine the changes of these soil properties as related to the chronosequence in the recovery process. The study was conducted in the province Monseñor Nouel, Dominican Republic. Overall, soil quality was different under the Casuarina and Acacia chronosequences as compared to recently mined soil and that under natural forest. In the Casuarina chronosequence soil pH decreased while soil electrical conductivity, total N, and total C increased. In the Acacia chronosequence, soil quality was similar to the terraced area, but pH and total N increased; no significant differences were observed for soil electrical conductivity and total carbon. In both species chronosequences, there was an increase in soil organic matter and available Ca. These results suggest there is an improvement in soil quality of the land in the mining area as a result of remediation by replanting with Casuarina equisetifolia Forst and Acacia mangium Willd compared to natural forest and terrace.
