SANTOS HERNANDEZ, Ana Laura et al. Technical and economic impact of rehabilitating pump irrigation systems. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2009, vol.27, n.2, pp.153-160. ISSN 2395-8030.

The evaluation of the impact of the rehabilitation of pumping equipment and irrigation systems in units with deep wells was conducted using information on irrigation units available from the Comisión Nacional del Agua. This study evaluated the impact of rehabilitating 1811 irrigation units with deep wells. Results showed that through investment in rehabilitation, on average, would recover a discharge of 16 L s-1 per irrigation unit, from 27 L s-1 (without project) to 43 L s-1 (with project). Pumping time per irrigation unit decreased on average by 740 h, from 2898 h (without project) to 2158 h (with project). This reduction in extraction time reduced consumption of electricity. Additionally, modernization of the irrigation systems improve overall efficiency of irrigation (net volume of irrigation divided by gross volume of irrigation): from 59% (without project) to 61% (with project). The gross volume of irrigation per unit increased from 281.69 thousand m3 to 334.06 thousand m3, and the cultivated area per unit of irrigation increased from 29.8 ha (without project) to 36.6 ha (with project). The gross volume of irrigation ha-1 decreased slightly from 9.5 thousand m3 to 9.1 thousand m3. Moreover, the gross productivity of land had an overall increase in the order of $1860 ha-1, while the net increases the productivity of land would be in the order of $1740 ha-1. The gross productivity of water increased by $0.24 m-1, and net water productivity by $0.21 m-3.

Palavras-chave : water productivity; soil productivity; volume of irrigation water; irrigation efficiency.
