CASAS-CAZARES, Ricardo et al. Contribution of the Environmental Dimension to Sustainable Development of Three Peasant Agroecosystems. Terra Latinoam [online]. 2008, vol.26, n.3, pp.275-284. ISSN 2395-8030.

The sustainability of three agroecosystems, the contribution or inhibition of ecological, social, and economical dimensions, and the associated parameters were evaluated with the relative sustainability index (RSI). The RSI integrates the dimensions and the parameters of each dimension with the same weighting and without transformations among them. At the same time it quantifies sustainability and the contribution of its dimensions with a reduced number of parameters selected by discriminated functions. The RSI scale varies from 0 to 1. There are differences (P = 0.0001) in the sustainability of the agroecosystems in Valles Centrales, Oaxaca, Mexico, with RSI of 0.518 was considered low. The contribution of the environmental dimension is slightly higher than the social dimension and superior to the economic dimension. The parameters that are related to physical and chemical soil conditions, its fertilization, as well as land and water availability, were the parameters that most explained the environmental differences among agroecosystems.
