Abstract

CORTES-ENRIQUEZ, Omar D. et al. Overview of congenital anomalies of epidemiological interest in Mexico. Perinatol. Reprod. Hum. [online]. 2022, vol.36, n.1, pp.16-20.  Epub Sep 30, 2022. ISSN 2524-1710.  https://doi.org/10.24875/per.20000021.

Background:

Congenital Anomalies represent an important cause of mortality in Mexico in individuals under one-year-old and kids between one and four years. The country has a Neural Tube Defects and Craniofacial malformation registry as well as a weekly registry of seven congenital anomalies of epidemiological interest Bifid Spine, Anencephaly, Encephalocele, Microcephaly, Cleft lip/palate, congenital syphilis, and congenital Rubella.

Objective:

To evaluate the tendency of the frequency of presentation of this pathologies.

Methods:

We searched the epidemiological bulletins of the Secretary of Health from 2000 to 2019, we registered the reported cases of the congenital anomalies of epidemiological interest, and we calculated the incidence per 100,000 births to observe how this indicator has evolved. We calculated Pearson´s correlation coefficient with different described risk factors for each congenital anomaly.

Results:

From the seven evaluated anomalies, five of them show a stable or decreasing tendency and two of them (Bifid Spine and Congenital Syphilis) show an increasing tendency.

Conclusions:

It is important to increase preventive actions for Congenital Anomalies in Mexico and to guaranty access to timely and quality prenatal attention.
