The Semantic Web is arising as a new alternative that could solve some of the problems of the actual Web model. By means of simple examples from an information professional perspective, this paper attempts to approach the basic technologies that will define the semantic infrastructure for developing the information systems of the future. Furthermore, the impact that the implementation of these technologies may have on work methodologies and techniques of a research area such as Information Science, is analyzed. Finally, the viability of this new model is briefly discussed.
