Resumen

BLANCO BOSCO, Emilio. Reasonable Fantasies: Educational Expectations at the End of High School in Mexico and Their Relationship to Socioeconomic Inequality. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2021, vol.36, n.103, pp.43-84.  Epub 06-Dic-2021. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article seeks to identify the mechanisms that explain the relationship between students’ socioeconomic origins and their educational expectations when they leave high school or its equivalent in Mexico. The analytical focus is based on the theory of the primary and secondary effects of educational inequality and the impact of the educational system’s structure. The author analyzes 1) students’ mathematical learning; 2) average high school grades; 3) income expected if they finish university; 4) the students’ labor situation; and 5) the kind of school the student attends. The results indicate that these factors explain about 30 percent of the effect of the social origins of their educational expectations.

Palabras llave : educational expectations; educational inequality; high-school-level education; multinomial logistical models; explanatory mechanisms.
