CASTRO PEREZ, Roberto y VILLANUEVA LOZANO, Marcia. The Medical Field in Mexico. Toward an Analysis of Its Sub-fields and Struggles from the Viewpoint of Bourdieu’s Genetic Structuralism. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2019, vol.34, n.97, pp.73-113. Epub 25-Ene-2020. ISSN 2007-8358.
The authors draw an initial characterization of the field of medicine in Mexico using Bourdieu’s genetic structuralism. They identify its sub-fields and the main relationships between them and describe the struggles within the sub-field of modern medicine: students compete to get into medical schools, to choose a place to practice medicine, to specialize, and to defend the prestige of the specialties. They argue that these struggles are the basis for reproducing the hierarchies that structure the field. Finally, they present evidence to show that institutions also struggle with each other.
