Abstract

MONTERRUBIO REDONDA, Jasmín Anavel. Ethnic and Legal Challenges of the Urban Planning System with Regard to Materializing the Social Function of Land in Mexico City. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2019, vol.34, n.96, pp.169-203. ISSN 2007-8358.

The aim of this article is to explore the ethnic and legal challenges facing the urban planning system with regard to materializing the social function of land in Mexico City. First, the author looks at the main concepts and theoretical debates involved in the topic. Then, she explores the dilemmas and contradictions involved in the social function of land as a way of appropriating the urban space. Her third part analyzes the challenges to urban planning from the point of view of the ethical dimensions linked to the definition of the common good, the recuperation of the city-citizenry binomial, and justice and prudence as guiding axes for the planner’s role. Her conclusions revolve around the complexities encountered in the planning process, the social function of land as an instrument for objectifying the public interest and the common good, and the difficulties of implementing the legal tools in the social space.

Keywords : social function of the land; urban planning; property rights; common good.
