Abstract

GIL GIMENO, Javier. From Confrontation to Aggiornamento in Relations between the Catholic Church and Modernity. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.91, pp.277-313. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article attempts to sociologically analyze two milestones that allow us to note the transition from confrontation to aggiornamento (renewal) in relations between the Roman Catholic Church and modernity: the Second Vatican Council and the early days of Pope Francis’s reign. The author examines the first by fully analyzing two of the most important texts to come out of the council’s deliberations, the Gaudium et spes and the Dignitatis humanae declaration. He looks at the second through a study both of Francis’s public image and two documents he wrote himself: the apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, the very first text published during his papacy, and his speech to the plenary before his election as pope.

Keywords : Roman Catholic Church; religious modernity; aggiornamento; confrontation; milestone; Second Vatican Council; Pope Francis.
