Abstract

ECHEVERRIA, Martin. Infotainment in Election Coverage: An Analysis of Journalistic Framing. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.91, pp.111-143. ISSN 2007-8358.

Media electoral coverage sometimes does not convey proposals to the citizenry, but centers on scandals, conflicts, or amusing anecdotes about political actors. This article delves into how much of the press acts along these lines, conceptualized as infotainment, by analyzing the content of Mexico’s 2015 mid-term elections. The findings show that coverage focuses on the election’s organizational processes and on conflicts between the actors; candidates and proposals are barely visible. Thus, infotainment occupies a significant place in electoral coverage, although it does not predominate.

Keywords : infotainment; journalism; framing; content analysis; elections.
