Abstract

LOPEZ RAMIREZ, Mónica. In Mexico or Abroad?: Types of Decision-making by Mexican Students about Where to Do Their Doctorates. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.90, pp.145-180. ISSN 2007-8358.

The article deals with the decision-making process of a group of Mexican engineering students about where to do their doctorates. Using a qualitative analysis, the author underlines the persistence and accumulated inequalities linked to students’ social origins in deciding to remain or leave the country to continue their education. These effects are mediated by the influence of prior educational institutions, the relationships the students establish with academics during their training, and the strategies and actions they carry out to deal with the decision.

Keywords : international mobility; students; educational decisions; educational inequality; decision-making processes.
