Resumen

DIDOU AUPETIT, Sylvie. Migrating to Enter the Academic Profession: Opportunities and Obstacles in Mexico for Young Foreign Academics. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.90, pp.111-144. ISSN 2007-8358.

The article analyzes aspects of the entry and professional careers of young foreign academics hired by Mexico’s science and technology system. The author uses information obtained in 18 interviews of researchers born outside of Mexico who were no older than 40 at the time of the interview. The central hypothesis is that scientific migration in this age group is essentially a planned search for opportunities for professional development and at the same time is linked to the participation in different kinds of networks (social, friendship-based, and centered on their area of study). The decision to establish oneself abroad is facilitated by government or bilateral programs for circulating competencies. However, it is not sparked by them, but rather by decisions on an institutional level and, above all, at the level of scientific teams when they have the ability to choose their own new members.

Palabras llave : scientific migration; young scientists; foreign researchers; academic profession.
