Abstract

ARTEAGA BOTELLO, Nelson  and  ARZUAGA MAGNONI, Javier. From Neo-functionalism to Iconic Consciousness: A Critical Essay for Thinking about Jeffrey Alexander's Cultural Sociology. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2016, vol.31, n.87, pp.09-41. ISSN 2007-8358.

This article analyzes the strong program for cultural sociology proposed by Jeffrey Alexander in his performative and iconic turns, as a proposal for multidimensional analysis that does not, despite his efforts, provide a general explanatory model for society. The authors examine Alexander's cultural sociology as the result of a career rooted in his multidimensional neo-functionalist program. This allows them to situate this author's proposal, observe the tensions attributable to his project, and perform a critical reading that explains its potential and interpretative limits.

Keywords : neo-functionalism; cultural sociology; performative turn; iconic turn.
