In this article, I review the way in which Michel Foucault reads the emblematic figures Plato, Machiavelli, and Hobbes in biopolitical courses. My hypothesis is that these names of political philosophy function as negative indices of biopower, as something that must be set in the margins of the Foucauldian text to be able to conceptualize biopower. The aim of this article is to contribute to the understanding of that margin where the problems of political legitimacy and representation are discussed and can be termed the juridical-discursive dimension of politics.
