Abstract

MOYA LOPEZ, Laura Angélica  and  OLVERA SERRANO, Margarita. The Experience of Temporality in Contemporary Societies, Social Identities, and Commemorative Rituals: An Analytical Proposal from the Standpoint of Sociology and the Theory of History. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2011, vol.26, n.73, pp.47-86. ISSN 2007-8358.

The starting point of this article is an examination of the distinction between historical memory and commemorative memory for analyzing commemorative rituals as performative acts defined by affective -and identity- related -more than cognitive- factors. In this light, it ponders the contributions of authors like Halbawchs, Connerton, Durkheim, Zerubavel, Koselleck, Hartog, and Rüsen, among others, to identify some of the problems found in the sociological and historic study of commemorations. It presents theoretical reflections for posing the topic in light of the conditions stemming from the experience of temporality in modern, contemporary societies.

Keywords : commemoration; collective memory; history; experiences of time; identity; early modernity; late modernity.
