Abstract

MORALES MORENO, Jorge. Obras de arte y testimonios históricos: una aproximación al objeto artístico como representación cultural de la época. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.71, pp.47-87. ISSN 2007-8358.

This essay proposes a cultural reading of works of art that underlines the political and cultural context in which they were produced more than their stylistic or technical proposals. Taking into consideration certain ideas of Peter Burke, it proposes an analysis of these works without framing them in the history of the gaze, of art, or of images, or considering them texts that imply specialized grammars, but rather merely that graphic or visual documents with artistic content constitute historical evidence of the ways of seeing and representing a specific period of time. The article uses Mexican painting from 1850 to 1910 as its interpretative horizon, in which the representation of the indigenous was the cross-cutting axis.

Keywords : political culture; political-cultural climate; San Carlos Academy; Jorge Enciso; historical painting; symbolist-modernist painting; nationalist liberalism; revolutionary liberalism; works of art as historical testimony.
