Abstract

GIROLA, Lidia. Del desarrollo y la modernización a la modernidad: De la posmodernidad a la globalización. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.67, pp.13-32. ISSN 2007-8358.

The concepts used by social scientists change and adapt to the different realities they study; they are symbolic constructions that, as such, can in turn be studied in a particular dimension: their historicity. The object of this article is to briefly review the different interpretations that Latin American social science, particularly sociology, has developed about modernization in the continent from the second half of the twentieth century until today. These interpretations have contributed to creating a stock of concepts for the discipline, at the same time that they have had an impact on what Latin American societies think about themselves and their future possibilities.

Keywords : Latin America; sociology; conceptual change; modernization; development; modernity; post-modernity; globalization.
