Given the diversity of uses of the concept of masculinity and the tendency to consider it as a set of characteristics of individuals, this article proposes a focus that uses the tools of contemporary sociology to interpret masculinity as an analytical category referring to a position of power -which can always be disputed- in a given social structure. It is an attempt to contribute to the conceptual debate on the issue using a conception of masculinity that integrates the contribution of gender studies with the theoretical bases of sociology.
