This article attempts aims to show that the social and cognitive factors involved in the process of pursuing a specialty are interdependent and that social patterns are related to the way in which an object of study, the research characteristics and organization are understood. To do this, the author selected two research groups in different fields, both of them belonging to a public university and both "successful". The interrelationship between the cognitive and the social operates in the manner of communicating results and is observable in the typical forms of publishing, the treatment of problems, and the way in which validity is defined.
