This article sketches the way academic life unfolds and the patterns of how Mexican academics communicate and disseminate their research results. Based on a national survey, the author traces typical patterns of production and dissemination of results, ways in which they update and mechanisms for relating across disciplines. Using a measure of the combination of activities and networks they participate in, the article analyzes the resulting profiles cross referencing them with the different kinds of institutions and disciplines, also exploring the effect of the length of their careers. This makes it possible to formulate certain hypotheses about the weight of these factors in academics' par-ticipation in the generation and communication of knowledge.
