Resumen

TINLEY, Alicia. Migración de Guanajuato a Alabama. Experiencias escolares de cuatro familias mexicanas. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.60, pp.143-172. ISSN 2007-8358.

From a qualitative methodological perspective, the author analyzes the educational experiences of four Mexican families who have migrated to new destinations in the United States. The study turns around the role played by schooling in the children’s lives and the way it changes on crossing the border. Migrant families often confront discrimination and hostility that affects their children’s learning and can often lead them to drop out of school. The author uses the concept “better practices” to point out how it is possible to transform traditional educational stances through greater commitment to the students, as opposed to the concept of “deficient thinking” that blames the “failure” of the learning process on students and their families.
