This article reviews some of the main lines of inquiry into the political dimension of contemporary migration. It seeks to show that the growing interest in studies of political participation has a long history that must be considered part of migration’s history itself. It also underlines that the study of international migrants’ political activity faithfully reflects the broad debate about notions traditionally used to conceive of the nation, territory and the homeland. New forms of being a citizen, different forms of political representation.
