This article analyzes some of the new characteristics of workers’ migration at the dawn of the millennium, and the role it plays in their destination societies. Firstly, worldwide restrictions on migration are key, contrasting precisely with the unrestricted international flow of other factors of production, when historically they had moved together and in the same direction. One of the consequences of this abnormal situation has been the extraordinary increase in undocumented migrants, as well as the role they play in the new productive processes. Finally, the article presents a preliminary look at the positive demographic effect of migration in receiving countries, which, paradoxically, have effected anti-immigrant policies.
