LOPEZ RAMIREZ, Adriana. Migration, Remittances and Residential Arrangements of Senior Citizens in Mexico. Estud. demogr. urbanos [online]. 2008, vol.23, n.3, pp.513-541. ISSN 2448-6515. https://doi.org/10.24201/edu.v23i3.1320.
This study analyzes the effects of migration in the household composition of senior citizens in Mexico. In theory, both the decrease in fertility and migration restrict the availability of relatives with whom they can share a household, which increases the likelihood of their living alone. At the same time, remittances provide a means of buying privacy and living independently. Data based on the 2000 sample census suggest that financial assistance in the form of remittances increases the choice of residential arrangements and the likelihood that senior citizens will live in independent households.
