Pemphigus is an autoimmune and chronic disease with low incidence and preva- lence. Nevertheless it could reach a 75% mortality rate without treatment. There are two principal types: vulgar pemphigus and foliaceus pemphigus, which are clinically characterized by skin blister appearance, with mucosal affection in patients with pemphigus vulgaris. This review details the epidemiology, etiology, physiopathology and treatment of this disease, remarking the steroid importance as the cornerstone in the management of these patients.
