Abstract

GONZALEZ GANDARA, Carlos; LOZANO VILANO, María de Lourdes; DE LA CRUZ FRANCISCO, Vicencio  and  DOMINGUEZ BARRADAS, Consuelo. Fish of the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System, Veracruz, Mexico. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.2, pp.191-208. ISSN 0186-2979.

A fish species checklist was prepared with data collected during 26 field trips that recorded observations and obtained samples from 644 localities of the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System from 2007 to 2009. A total of 1024 specimens collected with different fishing gear were studied, and 511 random visual records were recorded. The fish represented 282 species of 155 genera and 74 families, of which 24 were new records for the reefs of northern Veracruz. The most diverse families were the Serranidae, Gobiidae and Carangidae, with 24, 16 and 14 species respectively. The greatest fish richness of 248 species was recorded for Lobos reef. The fish diversity in the reefs of northern Veracruz is an important factor in defining management plans, not only considering the species richness but also because they harbour two endemic species: Elacatinus jarocho and E. redimiculus.

Keywords : Checklist; fish fauna; coral reefs; Veracruz.
