WAKIDA-KUSUNOKI, Armando T.; BECERRA-DE LA ROSA, Isidro; GONZALEZ-CRUZ, Alejandro y AMADOR-DEL ANGEL, Luis Enrique. Distribution and abundance of bycatch in the shrimp fishery of the coast of Tamaulipas (Closed season of 2005). Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.1, pp.75-86. ISSN 0186-2979.
An analysis of the shrimp fishery bycatch recorded for the summer of 2005 off the coast of Tamaulipas is presented. Samples were obtained during a research cruise following a random stratified sampling design with 22 quadrants, by depth and by latitude. Results showed a bycatch/shrimp ratio of 14.8 for the Tamaulipas coast, and a ratio of approximately 6 for the main fishing areas. The most abundant species were: long spine porgy Stenotomus caprínus, shoal flounder Syacium gunteri, inshore lizardfish Synodus foetens and dwarf goatfish Upeneus parvus. These four species represented 51.74 % of the total catch. Lutjanus campechanus was present in 52.38 % of the analysed tows, its catch weight percentage was low (averaging 1.187 %) and its greatest values were recorded in the southern region of Tamaulipas, which is not the main shrimp fishing area. It is considered necessary that studies be carried out with the purpose of developing technologies and/or management strategies that will allow shrimp fishery bycatch to be reduced.
