Abstract

ESCAMILLA-MONTES, Ruth; CRUZ-AGUERO, Gustavo De la; VILLALEJO-FUERTE, Marcial Trinidad  and  DIARTE-PLATA, Genaro. Fecundity of Callinectes arcuatus (Ordway, 1863) and C. bellicosus (Stimpson, 1859) (Decapoda: Brachyura: Portunidae) in Ensenada de la Paz, Gulf of California, Mexico. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.1, pp.53-61. ISSN 0186-2979.

A total of 23 ovigerous swimming crab females were captured at El Conchalito, Ensenada de La Paz, Baja California Sur, of which 37.5 % (eight females) were Callinectes arcuatus and 62.5 % (15 females) were C. bellicosus. Carapace width and total weight of each specimen were recorded. Fecundity was estimated following the gravimetric method. Mean fecundity for C. arcuatus was 4 094 171 ± 1 796 eggs per female with an average carapace width of 107.0 ± 14.3 mm, whereas that for C. bellicosus was 4 576 258 ± 974 eggs on average per female with an average carapace width of 112.8 ± 5.5 mm. Relative mean fecundity values were, for C. arcuatus 37 132 ± 5 162 eggs g-1 of body weight, and for C. bellicosus 36 088 ± 4 259 eggs g-1 of body weight. Relationships for carapace width (AC)-fecundity (Fp) and total weight (PT)-fecundity were obtained for each species using a potential model. Values obtained were, for C. arcuatus Fp= 1.7973AC3.119, R2= 0.88 and Fp= 36.95PT1.0043, R2=0.91, and for C. bellicosus Fp= 0.0018AC4.2607, R2= 0.82 and Fp= 7555.7PT1.3224, R2= 0.72.
