Resumen

KIDO-CRUZ, MT  y  KIDO, A. A comparative analysis of the quality of fishermen's housing in regard to the type of fishery along the southern Mexican Pacific. Universidad y ciencia [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.2, pp.163-173. ISSN 0186-2979.

Fishing has traditionally constituted an important source of income for residents of coastal areas. In recent years, sports fishing has also represented a source of income. Both types of fishing affect the quality of life of the people along the Mexican coasts, although on occasion they represent a conflict of interests. Such is the case of the common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in the ports of the state of Oaxaca as, on the one hand, sports fishing for this species has been allowed and, on the other, commercial fishing has been forbidden. However, the combination of the restriction and the fact that fishing is the main economic activity in the area together with consumer demand, has created a strong incentive for local fishermen to exploit this species. As a result of the difficulty of assessing the direct effect of an illegal activity on the generation of income, this study aimed to measure this impact indirectly by comparing two groups of fishermen located in the ports of Huatulco and Puerto Angel in the state of Oaxaca. The comparison was carried out with a multiple correspondence analysis. In particular, the quality of housing as an approximate measure of income level was contrasted between the fishermen that capture the common dolphinfish and those that don't. Results indicate there is a difference in the quality of housing between the two groups of fishermen, and suggest that the profit obtained from the commercial fishing of the common dolphinfish compensates the risk taken in pursing an illegal activity, and has represented a valuable income for the fishermen that carry out this activity.

Palabras llave : Common dolphinfish; sports fishing; commercial fishing; multiple correspondence analysis.
