Resumen

LOPEZ AREVALO, Jorge  y  PELAEZ HERREROS, Óscar. The uneven impact of the economic crisis of 2008-09 in the labor markets of the regions of Mexico: The northern border versus the southern region. Contad. Adm [online]. 2015, vol.60, suppl.2, pp.195-218. ISSN 0186-1042.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cya.2015.05.004.

The economic crisis of 2008-09 impacted the Mexican labor market in terms of quantity, quality and sector distribution of employment. This article explores these changes from a regional perspective, understanding that the areas of the country most closely linked to international markets suffered the consequences of the crisis in different ways and with different intensities than the more isolated regions. By fitting ARIMA models, we show that, in the states of the southern region, jobs were created during the crisis, most of them in precarious conditions, but without destruction of formal employment. The opposite happened in the northern border, where the manufacturing industry, the sector more closely linked to international trade, bore the bulk of the adjustment in employment. The tertiary and, especially, the primary sector acted as a shelter in the south, but also in the north of the country.
