Abstract

MEDINA GIACOMOZZI, Alex; CONSTANZO HIDALGO, Alexis  and  SANDOVAL SOTO, Rodrigo. Concentration and diversification strategies followed by the companies in Chile. Contad. Adm [online]. 2012, vol.57, n.4, pp.55-77. ISSN 0186-1042.

One of the most striking issues in strategy research is to study the way in which companies face the growing corporate market, either through a diversification strategy or a concentration one. There is a wide variety of publications on this particular issue, where some authors establish the preeminence of diversification over concentration, though some other authors come to the opposite conclusion. This diversity of results from the study of market strategies is a strong reason to continue research on the subject. For such reason, the central objective of this paper is to present the results obtained in the investigation of the corporate market growth strategies-either diversified or concentrated-most heavily used by Chilean corporations today. The main results obtained from a random sample of companies, is that the most used strategy by Chilean corporations is the concentration strategy with specialized business, over the diversiication one.

Keywords : concentration; diversification; corporate strategy; market strategy; growth strategy.
