Resumen

PEREZ AGUIRRE, Dulze María. José Renau’s Mural Work in Halle-Neustadt in the GDR (1968-1974). Secuencia [online]. 2023, n.115, e2032.  Epub 17-Mar-2023. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i115.2032.

This article analyzes the murals produced by José Renau in Halle-Neustadt to identify the social, ideological, and pedagogical aspects of the time, as well as the impact of Renau’s experience painting in Mexico with David Alfaro Siqueiros and in the Casino de la Selva, among other elements that will make it possible to identify the changes and continuities that occurred between the works of the two countries. It also identifies the murals as a tool that made it possible to reaffirm and legitimize one of the harshest dictatorial regimes of the Soviet bloc, to which Renau adapted easily as a result of his communist convictions. In this respect, the article makes a significant contribution to the historiography of Renau’s mural work in the GDR, highlighting its importance as part of German cultural heritage and as an extension of Mexican muralism, and its instrumental role in this artistic trend.
