On the basis of an analysis of work in the hotel sector in the city of Mar del Plata (Argentina) between 1960 and 1990, this article seeks to explore the characteristics acquired by male participation in the service sector, using a gender perspective. We focus specifically on employees who have worked in front desk and reception, examining the representations surrounding this work present in different types of discourse: hotel manuals, collective bargaining agreements, labor court judicial rulings and respondents’ life stories. The aim is to reconstruct and underline the meanings both workers and other social actors attributed to this work and, therefore, to those who engaged in it.
