This article analyzes the factors that influenced the decision of the “State of Spanish Haiti” to join Gran Colombia during its brief political existence from December 1821 to February 1822. The research findings underscore the complexity of the Dominican strategy and add to the existing hypotheses the importance of the unionist call and the identity of the republic founded by Simon Bolívar in 1819.
