CASTANO PAREJA, Yoer Javier. Strategies for the Promotion and Development of Agricultural Activity during the Cárdenas Administration: The Role Played by the National Ejido Credit Bank, 1934-1940. Secuencia [online]. 2014, n.89, pp.119-140. ISSN 2395-8464.

During the government of Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, one of the institutions that played a major role in the transformation of rural Mexico was the National Bank of Ejido Credit, whose task was to provide credit for farmers in organized ejido communities, both to acquire the tools needed to increase the productive capacity of their lands and to undertake large-scale irrigation works. Likewise, through its agencies, the National Bank of Ejido Credit conducted extensive social work in favor of the cultural and intellectual improvement of the peasantry organized into collective ejidos, an aspect that has been overlooked in the sparse literature on this organization. The main objective of this article is therefore to examine the role played by this banking institution in the promotion and development of Mexican agriculture and livestock sectors during the second half of the 1930s. The article therefore describes and analyzes the projects, works, successes and failures experienced by the institution from its inception to the end of the Cárdenas regime.

Palavras-chave : Cárdenas administration; agrarian reform; ejidos; peasants; rural property; Banco Nacional de Crédito Ejidal; cooperative organization.
