The legacy of state repression during the years of the last dictatorship posed one of the main challenges for Argentinean political leaders after the return to democracy. Many of the ideas included in political speeches had previously been expressed by Argentinean bishops. Sandrine Lefranc credits the Argentinean Church with drawing up a "doctrine of reconciliation", explicitly available for its translation into both politics and law. The complexity of this image must be increased through the incorporation of other voices within the episcopacy that provided a different perspective on what reconciliation should involve. These are the main themes that will be used to analyze the bishops' position on the triáis of the military begun in 1984.
