In 19th century Mexico, there were several colonization projects, although in the last two decades, these projects involved federal government's establishing national or foreign population nuclei with agricultural settlers. The objectives and policies of this process can be discovered by examining the case of the agricultural colonies of Italians established between 1881 and 1882, an issue that has not been studied in depth to date. At the same time, there is a parallel between the colonization of Mexico and that of South American countries. The comparison between them is apt, since it enables one to understand the particularities of the Mexican and the fact that, despite their differences, the common denominator of colonization projects in these countries is territorial occupation, settlement, economic development and mixed populations.
