Abstract

DAVILA VALDES, Claudia. The Legal and Administrative Treatment of Spanish Civil War Refugees in France and México: a comparative study. Secuencia [online]. 2007, n.69, pp.115-136. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i69.1020.

This study uses a comparative approach to analyze the legal and administrative treatment given by France and Mexico to the Spanish Civil War refugees that arrived in 1939. The aim is to shed light on the specificities of each experience. In France, due to the effects of the economic and political crisis and the war, the process was much longer, more complicated and bitter; refugees were kept in a state of uncertainty about their personal and legal status during the first six years of exile. In Mexico, which was enjoying a period of economic expansion, government encouraged the arrival of Spanish republicans to contribute to the process of industrialization, granting them all the necessary requirements for settling permanently in the country from the outset.

Keywords : Spanish refugees; asylum policies; France; México.
