DEHOUVE, Danièle. Imitation among the Mexica. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2023, n.83, pp.21-52. Epub 11-Dic-2023. ISSN 2007-2392. https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.83.2023.866.
The social sciences approach imitation from a double point of view: as gesture and as disguise of the personality (mimicry). A comparable distinction can be found in the vocabulary of imitation in the Nahuatl language (the language of the Aztecs of central Mexico in the 16th century): imitating by means of repeated and concomitant gestures (expressed by reduplicative verbs) and taking on a personality other than one’s own («ixiptla complex»).
