This article examines the form of government of a rancheria in the municipality of Texcaltitlan called Jesus del Monte, located in the southern region of the State of Mexico. Topics analyzed include the political community, forms of participation, local authorities and other positions, and the means of acceding to positions of power. The data for our analysis were obtained through ethnographic fieldwork, observation, and interviews with residents. The approach includes a review of the rancheria’s history which revealed that after experiencing periods of authoritarianism and anomie, it now boasts a regime based on direct democracy.

Keywords : Jesus del Monte; Texcaltitlán; democracy; political organization.
