This article analyzes environmental transformations in the Valley of Mexico and Mexico City in light of their relation to the practices and discourses through which various social actors legitimized their appropriation of the natural environment to promote its urbanization and commercialization in the 19th century; actions that generated an urban regimen marked by growing social and environmental imbalances that were handed down to the following century.

Keywords : Valley of Mexico; Mexico City; urban and environmental history; urbanization; 19th century.
