Resumen

GONZALEZ MORFIN, Juan. The Fourth Pastoral Letter of Francisco Orozco y Jiménez: a Detonator of the Persecution of the Catholic Clergy in Jalisco (1917-1918). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2019, vol.40, n.158, pp.232-241.  Epub 31-Dic-2019. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v40i158.398.

In the context of the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution, some Mexican bishops exiled in the United States published a protest that brought about various reprisals. Despite this tense setting, Francisco Orozco y Jiménez, the Archbishop of Guadalajara, wrote a pastoral letter that censored some aspects of the new Carta Magna. The brief document presented herein led the government of the state of Jalisco to close the temples where it had been read and initiate the persecution of Bishop Orozco, accusing him of sedition. A careful reading of this pastoral letter will allow us to judge whether the reprisals it provoked correspond to the arguments expressed by the Bishop.
