In the Old Spanish Regime, male and female doormen played a crucial role in controlling the flow of people and things into to, and out of, hospitals; a role that increased in importance after the Council of Trent. In hospitals that treated patients of both sexes, separation was clearly marked by a division inside the building where the area for women was guarded by a female doorman who sternly controlled entry through a turnstile behind which other women readied everything the hospital needed in terms of food preparation and laundering bedclothes and clothing belonging to both patients and hospital staff. This article examines the cases of selected hospitals in the city of Seville.
