RAMIREZ MENDEZ, Jessica. From Apostles to Intercessors. The Barefoot Carmelites in the Santo Desierto of Cuajimalpa, 1602-1606. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.37, n.148, pp.203-225. ISSN 2448-7554.
To date, the Santo Desierto Mission of the Barefoot Carmelites in New Spain has been studied as a place of contemplation for the friars who resided there, setting aside the changes in the uses that were planned for that wilderness. In the beginning, the Santo Desierto was equipped to support the labors that the Barefoot Carmelites were to undertake in The Indies; that is, it was conceived as a station that would prepare friars to serve on the missions in northern New Spain and in the Philippines. However, during the process of its consolidation, the existing concept of mission work was modified to stress intercession and conversion through prayer. This turn was later incorporated into the transformation that the San Alberto Province of the Barefoot Carmelites underwent around 1606.
